Questions & Answers for Halfords Halfords Leisure Battery 100 Ah

Question
How long will the leisure battery 110ah last if I ran an item which requires approx 270watts?

270 watts divided by 12.5 volts = 21.6 amps. Fully charged, one would think that 110 amp-hours divide by 21.6 would give you o.509 hours. But there ain't no such thing as 'fully charged' outside a laboratory - 95% is probably the best you'll get. And running a leisure down to flat is bad news - as is anything below 40% or 25% depending on which 'knowledgeable expert' is consulted.

Add in the thought that leisure batteries don't like to deliver power very fast - taking 10 hours to discharge is ' fast'. Above this rate, the volts drop rapidly, and more Amps are needed to give you 270 Watts.

Therefore the answer to your question is 'About a quarter of an hour' A longer answer says 'About a quarter of an hour for a couple of dozen times only'.

Question
what is the difference between a 12vcar battery and 12v leisure battery

A car battery provides a higher burst of power for a short time and is then quickly recharged once the vehicle is in motion.

Leisure batteries are built to provide a lower charge, such as that required to run electrical devices such as tv's or radio's, but for an extended period of time. These batteries can be discharged to a greater extent without permanent damage to the battery, although we advise you still keep them fully charged when possible.

Question
Is the leisure battery 110 Ah alright being re-charged from a normal engine driven alternator- or a deisel engine driven alternator in my case?
I assume the bench charge current of 11.0 amps relates to the current required from a battery charger? Will the engine alternator automatically supply the right current or does the battery have to be re-charged via a battery charger? Or will connecting this
type of battery to the engine alternator in the normal way -for the car 'starter' battery cause damage to this type of battery?

Question
How many charge cycles are these batteries good for?

The number of cycles you can get out of a leisure battery depends on:
Initial State of charge
Depth of discharge - down to how many volts / capacity you are discharging the battery
How the battery is recharged - time after discharge, length of charging phase, charging voltage, charging rate / characteristic / curve

In general, leisure batteries are designed for circa 400 cycles @ 60% depth of discharge (from 12.75 volts down to 12.2volts). After reaching this final voltage the battery needs to be put onto recharge as soon as possible - leaving a battery in a discharged condition will increase the risk of sulphation - which will cause permanent and irreversible damaged to the plates, shortening the service life of the battery.

Assuming the laptop draws around 3 amps the battery would last around 8 hours powering both the laptop and the 60w bulb before requiring a re-charge.
