A fully charged battery will show 12.5 volts.
It is possible to charge a battery above 12.5 volts. Charging a battery above 14.4 volts will cause the battery to gas and electrolyte will be lost.

Question
Specification required for charging
I need to charge one of these batteries (HCB063). I have a Digital Charger For Charging and Conditioning batteries.
I need to know the standard AH (Amp Hours) rating of this battery for charging As I do not want it to explode by Setting it too high.
The only Ratings on it are for cold crank and stand by at 25Amps.
As Soon As Possible Please. My Car needs it back! Thanks.

Question
How should vent tubes be connected?
The current battery fitted to my MK2 (NB) MX5 has vent tubes fitted and I understand that these are an important safety feature. This (HCB063) battery does not seem to have provision for these tubes. Am ok to fit this battery without connecting the tubes? Please notethe battery is located in the boot.

For years the accepted bench charging rate of a battery was 10% of its capacity. We recommend using Halfords battery chargers which will not damage the battery.

Question
Is the number branded into the top near the terminal the date and year of purchase?
I'm sure the battery (HCB063) is not very old but it is not holding charge and goes flat over a day or so when not connected to anything.

The number is the month and year of production. If the battery is in a low state of the charge, the battery charger may not be sophisitcated enough to recharge the battery correctly - this is common with older / budget chargers being used on calcium batteries. Also, if the battery has been left in a low state of charge - ie below 12.4volts, sulphation damage may have started. This is a chemical reaction that takes place within the battery - the sulphate from the sulphuric acid attaches itself to the plates - if it is allowed to 'crystalise' it forms permanent and irresversible damage to the plates that prevents the battery absorbing the charge.

Question
How to interpret code stamped on HCB063 Battery casing
The code on my HCB063 battery appears to be "F2C892103 0890 Z44" but is difficult to read. According to the RAC the battery has failed but I do not have the receipt as it was replaced whilst the car was on loan to my son. Can I tell from the code when the battery was manufactured? The battery was a replacement for on "04" registered vehicle and was purchased within the last couple of years.

Two different date codes are used, one is the month and year stamped near the terminals and the other is a month and year sticker on side of battery. You will require your receipt as proof of purchase to make any claim under the guarantee.
