Just to answer my own question - I got four and they fit ,no problem, with all four bikes on. I'm using the full width of the bars with the carriers equally spaced, facing alternately forwards and backwards. The bikes went on very comfortably next to each other and seem quite secure.

I've four carriers too though anticipated this issue. I used the wifes nail varnish to colour code the keys and locks and have not had any problem. Zero cost (though I'd no idea she had so many bottles of the stuff!)

I have a 2006 Ford Focus TDCi that was fitted with the proper Ford roof bars. These roof bars have a large elliptical cross-section. The Halfords Advanced Bike Carrier fit these bars very well even though the Ford roof bars are quite a bit larger in cross-section than the more common square-cross section type of roof bar.

To be on the safe side I'm going to order some spare plastic locking levers - if one of the 3 levers (1 differs from the other 2 as it is designed takes the barrel of a lock (part of the kit)) broke you'd be in a real pickle. It's a shame they don't include 1 spare - if you buy a tent there is usually a couple spare parts for anything that is critical.

Don't worry about the tyre width. The important bit is the bike frame. The bulkier the frame, the harder it will be to fix it securely on the roof carrier. Not impossible, just very fiddly.
