U-POL Etch Primer will adhere to lightly abraded chrome and then apply a standard primer then the topcoat. Any pit marks in the chrome need to be filled before spraying as they will re-appear in the topcoat when dry.

Although U-pol do not actually state that this etch primer can be used on brass, I have used it without problem.

To be sure of a good bond, first abrade the brass with wet/dry abrasive paper used dry (I use 240 grit), then wipe over with cellulose thinner and allow this to evaporate.

Only Very High Temperature paints can be used on exhaust manifolds (not the High Temperature brushing paints). It must be applied directly to the bare metal, which will need to be finely abraded first with abrasive paper. Applying it over U-pol etch primer would just result in the U-pol primer burning off and taking the VHT paint with it.

Question
Is this product stable under cellulose?
I am refinishing a seventy five year old car and have had to strip the bonnet to bare metal.
I will be using U-Pol grey cellulose Primer/Surfacer and blue cellulose finish.
I want to be sure that the cellulose materials will not attack the etch primer.

Hi, thanks for your interest in U-POL Acid #8 Etch Primer. Thank you for your enquiry and we would recommend letting the Acid#8 to thoroughly dry before applying a light coat of cellulose primer and letting this dry before applying a heavier 2nd coat.

Hi, thanks for your interest in U-POL Acid #8 Etch Primer. The Etch Primer cannot be used in this instance as the primer will degrade with heat from the engine.

Question
Is this product suitable for use on an alloy in-line gearbox?
Am restoring a 40 year old car. The gearbox is cast aluminium alloy and I want to give it a protective coating, preferably red. It does not get anything like as hot as an engine block. What paints would you recommend?

The etch primer would be required as a base coat and would do an effective job of protecting the aluminium in itself, as long as it is not exposed to temperatures exceeding 100deg.C.. To protect the primer coat a clear lacquer (such as Halfords Clear Lacquer Spray 300ml, item code: 451575) can the be used, again as long temperatures do not exceed 100deg.C.
