Up until the late 1960s Citroen used a synthetic fluid in the hydraulic systems of its vehicles called LHS 2(liquide hydraulique synthetic). This product was coloured red although in use it tends to go brown. Due to problems with components wearing rapidly Citroen later changed to a mineral-based product -LHM (Liquide Hydraulique mineral) which was coloured green. The two fluids are incompatible and it is essential that each is used only in systems for which it is designed. Ordinary DOT type fluids may be used in place of LHS 2 although these are not dyed red. The FMVSS standard mandates that they should be coloured water white to amber and while it is not unknown for some manufacturers to dye the product a different colour, in this case they cannot strictly be said to meet the DOT standards. LHS 2 was specially formulated to provide maximum lubricity -more than is offered by most DOT type brake fluids. LHS 2 was more similar in composition to DOT 3 fluid than DOT 4 or 5.1 and it is the DOT 3 grade that we would recommend.We would also recommend to double check to ensure that your vehicle does actually require LHS 2 as opposed to LHM.
