I have changed the oil in a few narrow boat engines such as the BMC and older Perkins units and used the Halfords 15W/40 Enhanced Mineral Diesel Oil with no problems resulting. The Classic 20/50 doesn't have the detergents in it for use in a diesel engine.

We don't have a great deal of information on this engine. If the handbook allows the use of an API SE CC 20W50 then Classic 20W50 will be fine.

Question
Is 20W/50 Classic Oil suitable?
I have a 1964 Rolls- Royce Silver Cloud. The Handbook recommends a 20W/30. I have been using Castrol 15W40 High Mileage, but wonder if the classic oil might be more suitable.

Halfords Classic 20W/50 is generally recommended for engines built in the 1960s and early 1970s because the specifications it meets are typical of those that would have been considered 'high performance' at the time. Having said that, if the engine in your classic Rolls-Royce has been used to operating on a more modern product then it would be better to stick with that particularly since the 15W/40 viscosity grade you mentioned is a closer match to the 20W/30 recommended by the manufacturer under normal operating conditions.

The Halfords Classic Oil 20w50 is only available in 5L. The Halfords classic oil is to SD specification from the 1960's so it contains no harmeful detergents etc.

Unfortunatley we are not sure what the actual requirements of this vehicle might be but the Halfords Classic 20W50 carries an API CC diesel specification which was introduced in 1961 so was "state of the art" about the same time the vehicle was made.
