It is better to cut back when the clear coat has been applied so that the orientation of the pearlescent particles is not affected, you cut back on the clear coat.

Question
Compatability
I am repainting kitchen cabinets and would prefer to lacquer the paint finish. The paint will be traditional Dulux gloss mixed to a particular shade. Due you have a lacquer which will do the job without reacting to the paint.

Halfords lacquer has not been tested over Dulux paint specifically. The Dulux gloss paints are alkyd based. Although touch-dry over-night they can take several weeks or even months to fully cure. There is a high probability that applying the lacquer during this period will result in wrinkling. You could always check for any wrinkling on a piece of scrap wood first.

For most vehicles the VIN plate on the chassis also has the paint code for the vehicle. If this is not visible we recommend you visit your local store and our store experts may be able to match the pain visually.

Question
Is this suitable for use on brake calipers?

As brake callipers get hotter than body panels, we have specific brake calliper paint. Clear lacquer is not formulated to be used on brake callipers, but as our calliper paints are all solid colours they do not require a lacquer.

Question
is your clear spray laquer suitable to use on a nickle plated metal frame
It is a motorcycle frame recently re-plated and polished which has now dulled. I am going to re-polish it and need to have it sprayed to keep moisture out

This lacquer has not been tested on Nickel. Adhesion could be a
problem if its highly polished as there will be little for the paint to
adhere to. If there is any chance of it coming into contact with petrol I would recommend the petrol resistant lacquer instead (code 768697). Either way we would recommend spraying a small area and checking satisfactory adhesion before proceeding.

You do not mention which spray paint you plan on spraying over. If it's an acrylic like the Halfords range of matched colours then its 100% compatible. If its an alkyd based paint it may react. I would advise checking compatibility on a piece of scrap metal first. If it doesn't bubble/peel during the drying process it will be fine. Ensure that the paintwork is perfectly clean before spraying. I would suggest washing the car with a good quality shampoo, followed by a secondary degreasing with Halfords Surface Cleaner spray (451658).

Yes but if it is a highly polished surface and you just want to lacquer the bare metal it will be difficult for the lacquer to stick. It would be prone to flaking. The alloy will need either lightly abrading or you could use an adhesion promoter spray. Either way it would dull the shine of polished alloy. If you want to paint the frame a different colour then you can abrade the surface then use primer followed by the paint colour and then lacquer. Note: lacquer is only needed with metallic colours. Flat colours have their own gloss finish.

Paint compatibility should be tested on a small inconspicuous area first as different types can react and spoil the finish. Our lacquer is acrylic based and is compatible with Halfords paints.
