Rubbing compound will be too abrasive. Try a good quality polish with a light cut such as Halfords advance polish. It may take a while this way (multiple applications) but its much kinder to the paintwork.

Yes as it will remove the layer of oxidised paint. You will need to use some firm pressure to remove this layer, more than you would for applying a polish. A product called T-cut is also designed for this job and comes in a liquid form which is easier to apply.

answer 2
Rubbing compound is generally used for blending in paint work repairs and may be too harsh for an all over treatment. Try T-cut or polish first.

Question
Can I use a drill mounted polisher?
What is the best method of application for this rubbing compound, to use a motorised polisher or simply a cloth?
Also I have just sprayed a section of my car and the lacquer looks a bit rubbish, will this take the bad look out of it?
Many Thanks

Question
Dish sponge scratches - is this the correct product?
Or would t-cut be better? I have tried t-cut on a small area and although it's a big improvement the scratches are still slightly visible.

This stuff is very good but if the scratches are to deep you will have to use a filler or similar product and paint over.

Question
Does this remove 1500-grit scratches?
I've been using the halfords lacquer spray paints and I've wet sanded the clear coat to 1500-grit. If this rubbing compound isn't suitable for the scratches left by 1500 grit (wet sanding) what grit scratches is it suitable for removing?
thanks ;)

Lacquer should not need to be sanded. Just flatten the paint then use lacquer and leave to dry. Rubbing paste is just used for removing overspray.

On the pearlescents, the advice is given not to use rubbing compound, because this can effect the way that the pearlescent particles have orientated during the drying process, and lead to a patchy finish.

After the laquer, this is used to remove over-spray. If the colour was a solid, then as well as removing the over-spray, it can remove mild oxidation from the surface of existing paint to help blend in new and old.
