Have also recently bought an expensive steam generator, they recommend using 50:50 with tap water, after 2 months of almost daily use no sign of anti-calc light coming on and virtually nothing in the scale trap, so it looks hopeful.

You can drink any distilled, deionized or otherwise purified water. It'll probably taste funny as most ppl are used to water with added chemicals, but it's harmless. Water is deionized to a large extent when it's boiled, however picks up stuff again as it condenses in your kettle and is poured out.. You tube easy distilled water and they'll show you how to make it at home.

Can I use the Battery Top Up Water to make soap? Tap water contains too many impurities. Soap is left to "cure" for 6 weeks, allowing the bar to become hard. Thanks in advance.

Hi, thanks for your interest in Halfords Battery Top-Up Water 5L.
The battery top up water is manufactured to a maximum level of 20 microSiemens conductivity but is typically 6-10 microSiemens. This would be approximately 70ppm TDS max. Suitable for battery top up . The manufacturer cannot advise on suitability for soap making.

No they are not the same.

Distilled water is water that has been boiled then condensed to collect the pure water. When the water is boiled the ions and minerals are left behind while the pure water boils and is collected.

Deionized water is water that has been filtered or treated to remove ions. There may be other materials still in the water, but the ions (which may interact with your chemicals) are removed.

From Wikipedia: "Solutions with a pH less than 7 are said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. Pure water has a pH very close to 7"

According to that definition liquid with 0 pH is acid. 6.48 is not very close to 7, but that is because de-ionised water is not 100% pure H2O, it still contains some amount of ions, although much less than tap water.

pH readers would show neutral as 7, with 0 being highly acidic and 14 highly alkaline. In this case the water is almost neutral, being very slightly acidic, but not by much.
